What is IndianaMOM?

IndianaMOM is an event of the Mission of Mercy (MOM) program. Mission of Mercy events across America have been providing free dental services for the underserved since 2000.

Who We Are

Mission of Mercy (MOM) events are large-scale dental clinics that provide free oral health care to patients of all ages who cannot otherwise afford or access care. MOM events across America have helped more than 222,000 patients and have provided nearly $142 million in free dental services since 2000.

IMG_1625The Indiana Dental Association Foundation for Dental Health, Inc. (IFDH) hosted its first MOM event on April 24 and 25, 2015, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. IndianaMOM was a tremendous opportunity to provide free dental services, educate, and coordinate care for underserved patients. Planners organized efforts to partner with local and state agencies to assist patients with:

  • discovering overall wellness resources
  • accessing social services resources
  • learning habits which will improve oral health
  • finding a dental home

Our History

Since the recession in 2008, the number of low-income working families who cannot afford dental care in Indiana has increased. Many Indiana workers who had insurance lost their dental coverage. Dental care is not covered for many Medicaid recipients in Indiana, and not covered at all under basic Medicare. Consequently, thousands of Hoosiers cannot afford dental care.

In 2013, a concerned group of dentists and others who recognized and wished to help address the need for dental care in Indiana started Indiana Mission of Mercy with the goal of improving the oral health of uninsured and underinsured children and adults in Indiana. This goal was accomplished during a free two-day dental health clinic at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on April 24 – 25, 2015, which was made possible by the tremendous efforts of volunteer dentists, hygienists, healthcare professionals and community members.

Thanks to the IndianaMOM event, over 1,200 Hoosiers received:

  • urgent, restorative and preventive dental care
  • comprehensive oral exams
  • training on oral health care and proper dental health instruction
  • information on follow-up and continued care

IndianaMOM also increased awareness of the general public, policymakers and legislators of the importance of regular dental care for overall good health. IndianaMOM promotes and advocates for long-term solutions that will provide quality dental care for all of Indiana’s citizens.
